Vetus targets inland and small commercial opportunities for electric propulsion

Vetus sees inland-waterway boats and smaller commercial vessels as opportunities for its electric propulsion business, while developing a broader hybrid offering, according to UK branch manager Ray Browning.
Speaking at the Southampton International Boat Show, Browning identified particular demand for electric propulsion in the inland sector. The company is also looking at electric applications for commercial craft around 12 metres and below.
Vetus offers a 22kW electric propulsion system as part of its E-Line range. The source reports that this model was introduced in January, although it does not establish the calendar year. Browning also said the company was working on hybrid engines spanning two-, three- and four-cylinder configurations, without providing further specifications or a launch schedule.
Alongside propulsion development, Vetus is expanding its bow-thruster and Bow Pro offerings towards larger vessels and higher-end applications. The Bow Pro range uses brushless motors and is continuously rated, with larger units extending the technology into more demanding installations.
For Browning, these developments reinforce the importance of relationships with boatbuilders. Vetus does not sell directly to consumers, and its show presence brings together dealers and supports original equipment manufacturer customers. Its participation at the Crick Boat Show similarly involves narrowboat builders and inland-waterway businesses.
Browning described the market as challenging but remained positive about opportunities in electric and hybrid propulsion. He said boat shows retain value through project discussions, dealer relationships and new leads, even when attendance does not translate into immediate sales.
